Tattoo Chemical Peels

!±8± Tattoo Chemical Peels

There has been a veritable explosion of interest in chemical peeling for the removal of tattoos in the last 20 years. Before the advent of resurfacing lasers, people would frequently use some of the stronger chemical peels to try to erase tattoos as well as deeper lines and wrinkles. When carried out by experts the results of some of these strong peels could be excellent. However, there was a real risk that the deeper the peel, the more white skin discoloration would occur, often leading too patchy and irregular results, and in some cases white and red scarring.

Now, however, in the current peel revolution, we have the benefit of peels that has a much more superficial effect. To achieve the optimum results, they are typically repeated up to three to four times.

What is chemical peeling?

Chemical peeling involves the application to the skin of a chemical that causes a shedding of the surface skin layers. By shedding these layers, a new skin layer is formed which is both healthier and less mottled. As well as prompting the process of regrowth, the chemical also tricks the dermis (the skin's supporting structure) into producing new collagen under the skin.

There are several types of superficial (surface) chemical peel (in order of most superficial to deepest):

Lactic acid peels
Glycolic acid peels
Beta-hydroxy acid peels
Jessner's peels
Combinations of the above peels

Lactic acid is one of the alpha-hydroxy acid peels obtained originally frm milk and dairy products. Lactic acid peels are extremely valuable for people with very sensitive skin. They are usually well tolerated and will lead to less peeling and skin shredding than glycolic and beta peels. Lactic acid could be considered an 'entry level' peel.

It is useful to touch on TCA peels (trichloroacetic acid) and how they compare to surface peels. A lower strength TCA, for example 10 - 25 percent, could actually be used as a superficial peel, whereas a strength of 35 percent will constitute a medium to deeper peel. These deeper peels are still used by some dermatologists, but many have moved over to laser resurfacing because of its potential for controlling depth. TCA is one of the most common acids in a number of tattoo removal products, and can be used on its own as a treatment.

There are however, various qualities of the acid to consider including whether or not the TCA is simply a commercial grade or is in a more pure 'medical' grade. The better the quality of the product, naturally the higher the price so make sure that you are selecting a product that will be effective rather than one that will simply save you money.

The acids named above, apart from the Jessner peel, are typically ineffective at removing tattoo ink, they simply do not penetrate the skin's surface deeply enough. They are safe, glycolic acid is actually derived from sugar cane and is non-toxic, but will not be effective for your needs since they will only loosen the dead surface skin cells to reveal brighter, smoother, younger-looking skin beneath.

Beta-hydroxy acid peels come in varying concentrations of salicylic acid (related to the chemical in aspirin) in a peel. They are similar to the glycolic acid peels in most ways, the main difference being that these are slightly stronger and may cause more redness and surface peeling. However, these are not used with as much effectiveness as TCA peels, they simply are not strong enough to penetrate to the necessary levels to get at the tattoo pigment. I hope this article sheds some light on the various peels that are out there and will help you have a more informed decision when contemplating using one of these methods to remove your unwanted ink

Tattoo Removal With TCA Chemical Peels

!±8± Tattoo Removal With TCA Chemical Peels

Approximately 25%-35% of tattooed people desire to have their tattoos removed within 5 years. Tattoo pigmentation goes deep and requires a series of treatments to remove. Most green ink contains titanium dioxide, which is very difficult to remove with laser treatments, but easier with chemical peels. Removal of red or black tattoos usually takes four or five laser treatments, at 0 to 0 each. Green tattoos can still be visible after up to 20 laser treatments, costing you time and $$$$. Ankle tattoos are among the toughest to remove with laser because the skin is so thin in that area. Skin bleaching creams do not give significant results on tattoos and take forever to be effective on most types of discoloration.

Chemical peels are the choice of many, due to the lower cost per treatment and the convenience of new at-home chemical peel kits. Tattoos and semi-permanent makeup gradually lighten with each chemical peel treatment depending on the type of peel solution used.

WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PEEL?

A chemical peel is the application of an acid to the skin to achieve a controlled burn in order to remove the top layers of skin. Chemical peels are often used to remove fine lines, small scars, discolorations such as tattoos, semi-permanent makeup, freckles or liver spots, sun damaged skin, and spots of precancerous keratosis which are removable at the top layers of skin (the epidermis). Peels may be applied to the entire face or to isolated areas, such as the upper lip. Peels can be applied to most areas of the body, using caution on thinner skin areas such as around the eyes. Various peel solutions are used by physicians to remove warts, moles, and calluses. The type and concentration of acid controls the depth of the burn used to achieve light, medium, and deep peels.

PEEL CLASSIFICATIONS

Chemical peels come in 3 basic categories - Light, Medium and Deep. TCA falls into the medium category (depending on %) and is the most desired type since it gives quicker results over the lighter alpha hydroxy acids but is not as traumatic as the heavier phenol peels. 25% TCA is considered a medium strength of TCA and works well on superficial skin imperfections.

Strengths and Applications

Light - AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) including Glycolic, Salicylic and Lactic Acids

Medium - TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) and Jessners solution

Deep - Phenol, which requires application by a physician

WHERE TO BUY AT-HOME PEEL KITS

Until recently, you had to visit a skin care specialist (dermatologist, esthetician, or cosmetic surgeon) to get a "TCA Peel" (chemical peel treatment using trichloroacetic acid). The specialist would have you come in for consultation, advise you on how the peel is done, and give you a mild alpha hydroxy acid lotion (AHA) to apply for one to two weeks prior to the peel treatment. The AHA lotion or gel conditions the skin and begins the exfoliation process. On your next visit your specialist would apply the TCA solution and remind you of the post treatment care ... avoiding sun exposure and keeping the treated skin protected with an antibacterial ointment, then he'd send you on your way.

Well now you can purchase at-home TCA Peel Kits designed to give you everything you need to apply a peel treatment yourself in the privacy of your home, saving you the expense of office visits and money. Yavonae Skin Care offers TCA Peel Kits that include everything you'll need from TCA peel solution, cotton pads, and alpha hydroxy acid prep lotions to ointment, sunblock, fans, and concealers. These kits come with complete instructions including how to apply a patch test to determine your skin's reaction to the peel solution and what strength to use. Unlike deep peels, medium peels may be performed safely on people with darker skin tones TCA is a great alternative when milder peels stop producing desired benefits.

Natural Facial Peel - Your Natural Acne Treatment

!±8± Natural Facial Peel - Your Natural Acne Treatment

Facial peels are a way to remove acne, acne scars, wrinkles, age spots, and other skin surface problems, but before you go and pay to 9 for your next chemical facial peel from a spa or doctors office, here's some facts about the horrific dangers of these procedures, and more importantly what the safe, natural and more effective alternative may be...

A chemical facial peel is the process of a doctor, or esthetician applying a burning acid to your face and neck. Facial peels are a fruit acid that literally burns the dead skin off your face so a new layer of skin can take it's place.

The problem with fruit acid peels is that acid is insensitive to dead and living cells. It can't tell the difference between cells that are actually dead, and need to be removed from the face and the living, acive and growing cells that, if burned can cause permanent scarring, inflammation, and other painful side effects.

Acid peels do just what they promise to do, they literally burn the skin. the dead skin on the surface of your face is called the corneum. Underneath the corneum is a layer of the skin called the basal cell layer. The basal cell layer is a layer of skin where new skin cells are born and actively growing. If too much damage is done to this precious layer of skin visible scarring can occur.

Acid facial peels are insensitive to this layer of skin. Although they do remove the corneum they can, and often do burn some of the basal cell layer. When acid is applied to the face you literally attack the skin, and the basal cells, feeling the attack, clump together in a desperate attempt to heal the skin quickly. This clumping together of the cells is how scarring occurs.

So what's the alternative?

Well, there are several. Microdermabrasion, though less effective, irritating, abrasive to the skin and does not completely remove the corneum layer of the skin. Jessner Peel, Bio-Medic "Micropeel", Microdermabrasion, Ob agi Blue Peel, Vibrodermabrasion, Crystal Peels, and many others still require that patients sign a "consent form" attesting that you are aware of and understand the risks involved in these procedures...These techniques are injury by design which is not the natural process of skin renewal.

An all natural heat and moisture sensitive enzyme, which removes 100% of the corneum in under 10 minutes is now available on the market. Called the New You Skin Rejuvenating System, it is derived from the all natural aloe vera plant. This enzyme shies away from cells that still contain heat and moisture - signs of life, and instead bond only to dead, dry and "cold" cells on your face. The dead skin literally falls off your face right in front of your eyes and onto the counter in front of you.

Because this enzyme does absolutely no damage to the skin, causes no redness, scarring, heat sensitivity or other scary side effects of facial peels it is completely safe for home use and can be used by anyone regardless of skin type or sensitivity.

So before you spend any more money on invasive procedures that cause damaging side effects look into other methods that may be a more natural and safe alternative to invasive procedures.

Combined Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing - New Cosmetic Laser Treatment For Wrinkle Removal

!±8± Combined Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing - New Cosmetic Laser Treatment For Wrinkle Removal

All of us over 30 begin to see distressing signs of facial aging and sun damaged skin. Sun worshippers and smokers see these skin aging changes sooner. Fractional laser skin resurfacing, a non-surgical anti-aging skin rejuvenation method was introduced several years ago as an improved method for wrinkle removal and facial skin rejuvenation.

Fractional laser skin resurfacing was developed to eliminate many of the problems associated with traditional old time laser skin resurfacing. Traditional laser skin resurfacing was very effective at wrinkle removal, but recovery was long and difficult and the skin often turned white, called hypo pigmentation, 6 months after treatment. Fractional laser skin resurfacing was developed to remove wrinkles and rejuvenate the skin with minimal downtime, quick recovery and normal skin color and texture after the skin rejuvenation procedure.

Recently, a new technique called combined fractional laser skin resurfacing has been developed to improve wrinkle removal and skin rejuvenation results. This new technique provides much better wrinkle removal and skin rejuvenation, but also plumps and improves the texture of aging skin much better than previous techniques.

How Does Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing Remove Wrinkles and Rejuvenate the Skin?

The basic cause of skin wrinkles and skin aging changes is loss of collagen in the skin. Collagen in the deep layer of our skin provides moisture, nutritional support, skin plumping and elasticity which is the firmness and skin tightening component of our skin.

As we age, exposure to years of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight, toxins in our diet and environment, and unhealthy lifestyles such as smoking and tanning all contribute to the destruction of collagen in our skin. When collagen is lost, our skin looses texture, elasticity and fullness, and wrinkles and sagging skin result. For an analogy, think of a plump juicy plum with smooth skin. Place the plum into the sun for a period of time, water (like collagen in the skin) is lost and the plum turns into a wrinkled prune.

In an effort to protect itself, our skin surface responds to these aging changes by producing pigment to block the UV sunlight, and our skin thickens with extra layers of dry old looking skin.

All cosmetic laser skin rejuvenation methods attempt to restore skin to a youthful state by stimulating the skin to grow new collagen to replace lost skin collagen to plump and tighten loose skin.  In addition, many cosmetic laser skin rejuvenation methods strip away the damaged surface skin cells to remove pigment and dead thickened skin and stimulate new healthy looking skin cells to grow.

Fractional laser skin resurfacing is a skin rejuvenation technique which removes dead surface skin cells and pigment and stimulates the deep layer of the skin, the dermis to produce new collagen to replace the collagen that has been lost by facial aging changes. In summary:

Skin aging is results in:

Loss of collagen in the skin=wrinkles and loose skin Skin surface changes=dry, pigmented, course skin

All cosmetic laser skin resurfacing methods rejuvenate skin by:

Removing aged skin surface cells and promoting new skin cell growth Promoting new deep skin collagen to plump wrinkles and tighten skin
Why is Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing Better?

Older CO2 laser resurfacing, called flat beam laser resurfacing produced excellent wrinkle removal and skin tightening, but recovery was very difficult, requiring weeks for the skin to heal. In addition, traditional laser skin resurfacing damaged pigment cells in the skin which caused the skin to turn white. These problems were caused by the fact that the older lasers treated the entire surface of the facial skin, thus healing required new skin cells to be produced by hair follicles and sweat glands in the skin. This was a very slow process requiring up to two weeks for new skin cells to cover the surface of the face.

New fractional laser skin resurfacing is effective but much safer than traditional CO2 resurfacing. The fractional laser resurfacing beam is broken up into many small beams so that the laser affects only small focused areas of the skin. Fractional laser resurfacing leaves skip areas on the skin that are left normal and undamaged. These untreated skin cells are able to rapidly heal the treated skin with new skin cells. The treated areas, called micro treatment zones are healed in 6 hours with the fractional Lux2940 Erbium laser on the Starlux laser. CO2 fractional lasers like the Fraxel Repair and Lumenis ActiveFX and DeepFX take a little longer, up to 48-72 hours.

Fractional lasers are also able to penetrate the skin into the dermis much deeper than flat beam techniques. Deeper penetration causes more effective new collagen production. This characteristic results in improved skin plumping and better skin texture.

Fractional laser skin resurfacing is better than old time flat beam laser resurfacing because skin healing is much quicker, and the risk of white skin, hypo pigmentation is much less.

The benefits of fractional laser skin resurfacing are:

Quicker skin healing Deeper penetration for better collagen production Less risk of hypo pigmentation Improved skin texture More gentle, quicker recovery Improved wrinkle removal, pigment removal and skin tightening
What Is Non-ablative Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing-Fraxel, Starlux Lux1540, Affirm

The first fractional lasers were introduced 3-4 years ago and are non-ablative 1450nm and 1540nm (nm=nanometers or one millionth of a meter, and are the units used to measure the wavelength of a particular laser) Erbium lasers. Non-ablative laser skin treatments go deep into the dermis of the skin to promote new collagen, but non-ablative lasers to not ablate or remove the surface skin cells.

Thus the non-ablative fractional skin resurfacing lasers remove wrinkles by building new collagen in the skin, but do not remove the surface aging changes of the skin.

The benefit on the non-ablative technique is that there is less recovery time for healing as the skin is not broken. You are pink after a treatment, but can wear makeup and no recovery time is required.

Because non-ablative treatments are weaker, you need 4 treatments scheduled 4-6 weeks apart for a good result.

I use the Starlux Lux1540 non-ablative laser; other models are the Fraxel and the Affirm. The best applications are acne scar removal, scar improvement, skin plumping, pigment removal and mild to moderate wrinkle removal

Because the skin surface is not ablated, wrinkle removal is less effective with the non-ablative lasers, thus new ablative fractional laser resurfacing technology has been developed in the past year and a half.

What Is Ablative Fractional Laser Resurfacing

For ablation, different laser wavelengths, the 2940nm Erbium laser and the CO2 laser are used. These laser wavelengths are more powerful and vaporize the skin cells on the surface as well as causing inflammation deep into the dermis.

Because surface skin cells are removed, the ablative fractional lasers are more effective at removing wrinkles, pigment, and old dead skin cells. The downside is that some recovery is required for skin healing, however the down time is much less, about a third of the time required recovering from old time flat beam laser skin treatments.

The other benefit is that ablative fractional laser skin resurfacing requires only one treatment, as opposed to the 4 treatments required for non-ablative techniques.

I use the Starlux lux2940 fractional ablative laser resurfacing method. The Starlux Lux2940 is an Erbium laser and heals faster than the fractional CO2 lasers, the Fraxel Repair, the ActiveFX and DeepFX ablative machines.

What is Combined Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing and Why is It Better?

The newest and most effective cosmetic laser skin rejuvenation treatment I combined fractional laser skin resurfacing. After two years of research and over two hundred treatments, we have learned that combining the Starlux Lux1540 non ablative treatment with the Starlux lux2940 ablative treatment provides the most effective wrinkle removal and skin rejuvenation treatment.

The Starlux Lux1540 and Starlux Lux2940 are done in the same treatment session. The results in terms of wrinkle removal, skin plumping, improved skin texture, pigment removal and general skin rejuvenation are excellent and better than either treatment done alone.

This is a very new technique; I just presented our findings in Dallas, Texas at the Palomar Medical Advanced laser seminar on January 24, 2009. We have been working on this project for over two years.

How Is Combined Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing Done?

The combined fractional laser skin resurfacing treatment is done in my office with a topical local anesthetic cream. Your face will be cleansed and a topical numbing cream applied. I also give you a tranquilizer and an analgesic to help you relax and be more comfortable during treatment.

The Starlux Lux1540 treatment is done first by my medical aesthetician and takes about 30 minutes. Numbing medicine is re-applied, and I or my plastic surgeon associate do the actual Starlux Lux2940 ablative treatment.

After your treatment we apply cold wet compresses to the skin. Then a soothing ointment will be placed on your skin, and you will go home. During the first 24 hours you will place soothing soaks on your skin and apply ointment every few hours.

By day 2 or 3 you will finish the soaks and only apply ointment as you need it.

You will be given analgesic tablets in case you need them and Valtrex to protect you from a Herpes Skin outbreak. We also give you prophylactic antibiotics to protect against skin infection during healing.

What Will I look Like After Treatment and How Long Is Recovery?

Your skin will be pink to red after treatment. The first 24 hours your skin will be moist and old skin cells will peel off and be removed by the soaks.

Your new skin will cover your face in 2 to 3 days, very different from the 2-3 weeks required for skin healing after the old time float beam laser treatments.

Your face will remain pink for 5-7 days, but you can wear make up by day 4. This is about a third or fourth of the recovery time from a deep chemical peel or an old time flat beam laser treatment.

When Do I See My Final Result?

You will see a remarkable improvement in wrinkles and skin texture with fresh new skin starting at 10 days and for the first 3 weeks. However, new collagen production, the main goal of this treatment does not begin for 6 weeks and continues for one year after treatment.

The initial benefits are due to swelling of the skin which subsides at about 3-4 weeks so expect to see your wrinkles return initially.

However at 3 months you will really start to see the improvement in your skin and at 6 months results are very dramatic.

In my experience, wrinkle removal, skin tightening and improvement in skin plumping and skin texture are most obvious at one year following treatment.

How Do I Find A Doctor Who Uses This Technique?

Board certified plastic surgeons and dermatologists are the experts at laser skin rejuvenation treatments. Ablative laser resurfacing is more commonly done by plastic surgeons because of the complexity of skin care after the procedure.

The new combined technique is so new that it will be some time before it is widely practiced.

Be certain that your physician is board certified and has experience in laser surgery-there are many new users of lasers who simply do not have the experience required for these advance laser treatments.

Chemical Peel Facial - Your Guide to the Five Most Popular Peels

!±8± Chemical Peel Facial - Your Guide to the Five Most Popular Peels

There are several types of facial chemical peel, you can get from a beautician. In this article you will learn the five most popular scrubs and their benefits.

The most popular would be the glycolic acid. Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acids derived from sugar cane. This shell is often used by beauticians as a percentage of 10-30 percent, to dissolve the desmosomes between the cells to the skin peeling.

When used in small percentage, this dish is great for an immediatehealthy glow and look refreshed. At a time of peeling, glycolic acid can be reduced to improve the uniform color of the skin and tissue, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and minimize the appearance of acne scars and blemishes.

Salicylic acid peel layer is always a popular peeling agent for oily skin and acne. The bowls now work to resolve oil and improve the acne. When used over time, helps even out skin texture and minimize the appearance of acne scars and blemishes. Igenerally recommend this peel for someone who is suffering from acne problems.

Lactic Acid is one of the most gentle peeling agent. This is a non-irritating skin exfoliator. It breaks down bonds between cells to allow for easier exfoliation of the dead skin cells. This peel helps give a smoother and healthier appearance to the skin. When used over time, lactic acid can also help decrease lines and wrinkles, improve oily, dry and acne prone skin. Great for someone with a sensitive skin type.

Jessner Peel- This peel is a blend of saliicylic acid, lactic acid, resorcinol and ethanol. The Jessner peel create a very similar effect of a deeper peel without the irritation. When administered over a period of times, the Jessner peel is very effective in treating sun damage and improving hyperpigmentation. Great for some with cystic acne.

TCA Peel - This peel uses trichloracetic acid and the percentages usually range from 7-15 percentage when performed by an esthetician. This peel penetrates deeper into the skin, therefore is amazing for treatment of wrinkles, pigmentation and skin blemishes the first time it is applied.

There you go. I hope you find this information useful. Enjoy your next chemical peel facial.
